The Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act requires the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council to develop multi-year research priorities to inform policy-making. The Council recently developed its next set of priorities (2014-2019). These priorities are sent to the U.S. Secretary of Commerce and the National Marine Fisheries Service Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center so they may be acted upon. However many individual research priorities may go unaddressed due to limited resources. Therefore, the Council is placing our research needs on our website so that external academics and consultants may be aware of them. Although the Council does not have dedicated funding to address these research items, grant programs, such as NOAA’s Saltonstall-Kennedy Grant Program, are often developed around, or are responsive to, vetted policy information needs. The Council will, as appropriate, provide written letters of support for proposals that seek to address any of these research priorities.
Those interested in conducting research in response to our data needs should contact the Council and the NMFS Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center.
