Request for Comments – Pelagics FEP Regulatory Amendment: Revised Swordfish Trip Limits in the American Samoa Longline Fishery (Due by July 14, 2020)
The Council and NMFS is proposing to revise the ten swordfish per trip retention limit in the American Samoa deep-set longline fishery. This limit was established as part of a suite of gear and operational requirements intended to discourage fishermen shallow-set fishing, thus reducing green sea turtle interactions. However, due to changes in gear, sea turtle interactions were reduced and limiting the retention of swordfish results in wasted fish that could be marketed and supplied as food for American Samoa.
A proposed rule and request for comments was published in the Federal Register on June 29, 2020. Comments are due to NMFS by July 14, 2020 (see Federal Register Notice below).
