Protocols and Tips for Visiting and Working in the Territories

At its 201st meeting in December 2024, the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council endorsed cultural protocol living documents for American Samoa, Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

Council staff and advisors developed these documents to serve as sensitivity guides for organizations, agencies and groups visiting the territories. They provide important information describing how to plan and conduct work in a culturally appropriate manner, and the resources available to assist in the visitor’s efforts. Sections address topics such as travel logistics, types of engagement, etiquette for personal interactions and hosting meetings.

The Protocols are available on the Council website under the Indigenous Resources section (near the bottom) of each archipelago’s web page (American Samoa, Guam, CNMI):
